There soon could be more places to sleep in Chelsea.
Cambria Suites, a division of Choice Hotels International, is planning to build a $50 million hotel on a city-owned parcel overlooking Route 1 adjacent to the Windham Hotel.
“We think that adding an additional hotel in Chelsea is a good idea because people will begin to think about the city as a place with a concentration of hotels,” said Christine Thomas, Choice’s director of real estate and acquisitions. “That’s good for the hotels and good for the city.”
Chelsea has designated Development & Marketing Group Cos., of Chelsea as the developer of the 1.5 acre lot that contains an abandoned one-story brick building. A price for the parcel has yet to be determined, according to Kevin Saba, managing partner.
If approved, the lodging would be the first Cambria Suites in Massachusetts. The chain boasts rooms that are 25 percent larger than standard hotel rooms.
Choice franchises more than 5,700 hotels, representing more than 460,000 rooms, in the United States and 40 countries. The company offers guest rooms at Comfort Inn, Comfort Suites, Quality, Sleep Inn, Clarion, Cambria Suites, MainStay Suites, Suburban Ex-tended Stay Hotel, Econo Lodge and Rodeway Inn brands.
