boston-victoriansMassachusetts is among the 10 most expensive states for renters, according to a new report from the National Low Income Housing Coalition.

Although the recession is dragging down wages, rents across the country are continuing to increase, the report found.

An average family needs to make more than $38,000 a year in order to afford a two- bedroom apartment. For families relying on a single wage earner, that works out to $18.44 per hour. According to the report, the Bay State is among 10 other states where an individual would have to earn more than $20 per hour to afford a two-bedroom apartment.

The average estimated wage for renters nationwide is $14.44. A person making minimum wage could not afford a one-bedroom apartment at market rates in any part of the country, the report found.

A law passed in 2008 would create a National Housing Trust Fund that would provide federal funds to build, rehabilitate and preserve rental housing for people with the lowest incomes, but Congress has not yet appropriates any monies toward the fund.
