A fatal accident involving a construction worker halted work at the Russia Wharf project in Boston last week.

A spokeswoman for Boston EMS said the man was pronounced dead at the scene on Friday.

According to workers exiting the site at the corner of Atlantic Ave. and Congress Street, concrete debris fell on a laborer working at the construction site, crushing him.

"They were digging out the building, and a piece of concrete fell on him," one said. "It was just bad luck."

Boston Police, Fire, and EMS responded to scene, but declined to provide details. Construction workers could be seen gathering lunch boxes and thermoses and leaving the job site shortly after 11am this morning.

Boston Properties, developer of the office tower, released the following statement:

"It is with great sadness that we have confirmed that one fatality has occurred as a result of an accident at our construction site at 530 Atlantic Ave. in Boston. Emergency response teams were immediately summoned and responded to the scene. The injured worker was transported to an area hospital. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim’s family at this time. The accident is still currently under investigation."
