Massachusetts’ biggest metro may attract thousands more Millennials than Manchester, New Hampshire, but New England’s 10th-largest city is far better at retaining them than its larger peers.

According to a new study from SmartAsset based on the most recent U.S. Census Bureau data available, 2,344 of the 6,011 Millennials who moved to Manchester in 2017 stayed put, placing it in the top 20 cities nationwide by that measure.

By contrast, Boston attracted 32,822 Millennials in the same year, but suffered a net out-migration of 954 Millennials. Cambridge was able to retain more, attracting 9,468 and holding on to 1,687.

Millennials appeared to flee Worcester during the study period, however – only 2,970 moved in during 2017 and 4,567 moved out, putting it 134th out of the 173 cities in the study.

Statewide, New Hampshire did a much better job that either Massachusetts or Connecticut in retaining Millennials in 2017, with 22,288 moving in and only 15,569 moving out. Connecticut attracted 39,692 Millennials in the same period, but lost 41,479. Massachusetts attracted 64,878 but lost 79,407.
