Boston Scientific’s endosurgery headquarters in Marlborough specializes in making surgical procedures and equipment less invasive.
Now, the facility itself will be less environmentally invasive as well, thanks to its recently obtained Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The 500,000-square-foot campus in Marlborough, home to the company’s endosurgery group and large amounts of laboratory and office space, was recently fully renovated.
Boston Scientific has its corporate headquarters off Route 9 in Natick.
Boston Scientific obtained LEED certification for the Marlborough renovation project by incorporating elements that provide significant environmental benefits, a higher-quality work environment and lower operating expenses, according to the company.
Examples of some of the measures taken to help minimize the campus’ environmental impact include: the installation of a heat-reflective insulated roof that reduces cooling requirements; a state-of-the-art ventilation system that precisely delivers heating and cooling where needed; and low-flow plumbing fixtures designed to decrease water usage.
The company also used recycled building materials where possible, and arranged for more than 95 percent of the project’sproject’s construction waste to be recycled, both of which minimized environmental impacts from demolition and renovation work, the company said.
Measures were also taken to improve the overall air quality and work atmosphere inside the campus’ numerous buildings. According to the company, windows and side lights were installed throughout the facility to maximize the amount of natural light reaching interior offices and cubicles. Special construction materials and furniture were selected to limit the release of volatile organic compounds and hazardous chemicals in order to protect indoor air quality.
“We worked hard to provide a workplace that energizes people, while providing a benefit to the environment and our bottom line,”,” said Steve Moreci, senior vice presidentpresident and group president, endosurgery. “Receiving LEED certification is a welcome endorsement of our efforts to be an environmentally conscious corporate citizen.”
The Marlborough endosurgery project is the second LEED award for Boston Scientific. Last year, the company received LEED certification for its manufacturing facility in Maple Grove, Minn. Boston Scientific recently received a Central Mass. Green Award from the Worcester Business Journal to recognize the environmental efforts behind the Marlborough renovation project.
