Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital-Needham will open its new $30 million wing for a public viewing on Saturday, giving the community a glimpse of its new state-of-the-art emergency department and 20 private, amenity-filled hospital rooms.

The 37,000-square-foot new wing is the first new construction in more than 40 years at the hospital, an institution that was facing closure less than a decade ago.

"The completion of this major expansion is not only a new chapter for this hospital, but a re-definition of the way health care is provided in this community," said President and Chief Executive Officer Jeff Liebman. "We now have a facility that matches the high quality medical team in place here at BID-Needham."

The BID-Needham emergency department has one of the shortest wait times in the state, according to a statement

The new wing was designed by Steffian Bradley Architects and built by Suffolk Construction, both of Boston. It incorporates sustainable green building design techniques and concepts to reduce impact on the environment by utilizing energy more efficiently and creating an environment conducive to healing, according to a statement.

The grand opening will include tours of the new emergency department and the new inpatient units. There will also be free health screenings that include cholesterol testing and bone density screenings. Physicians will be available throughout the day to answer medical questions.
