Mayor Thomas M. Menino, city officials and community members today will celebrate the grand opening of ZUMIX, a non-profit youth music organization, in East Boston.
The new $4.6 million renovated firehouse will host local after-school music education. The circa-1920s structure, known as the Engine Company 40 Firehouse, was completely gutted to accommodate the renovation.
"As a community we should be tremendously proud of this wonderful transformation as ZUMIX and the East Boston Community Development Corp. have worked tirelessly with the city, community groups, and funding partners to turn this building into a state-of-the-art performing arts center for Boston’s young people to enjoy," said Menino. "This is a great example of how strong partnerships at the community level bring new energy to our neighborhoods. I want to thank ZUMIX for helping to transform the lives of our residents by providing access to the arts in a unique setting."
The 9,000-square-foot facility at 260 Sumner St. in East Boston has a performance stage, rehearsal rooms, and a recording studio and radio station.
It replaces ZUMIX’ former headquarters on nearby Maverick Street.
