Redevelopment of a Roxbury mosque would create 38 income-restricted apartments and expand the capacity of a local food pantry and education programs.
The Society for Islamic Brotherhood is proposing to demolish the mosque at 722-726 Shawmut Ave. and construct a new 3-story building known as New Madinah.
Designed by Monte French Design Studio of Boston and named after a Saudi Arabian pilgrimage site, the nearly 49,000-square-foot project would include more than 14,000 square feet of worship, commercial and community space on the lower floors.
The project would double the mosque’s capacity to more than 300 worshipers, and expand the capacity of the Islamic Multi-Services Organization’s food pantry, which operates out of the existing building.
Larger classroom spaces for the IMSO’s college and career preparatory courses also are proposed, according to a small project review application submitted to the Boston Planning & Development Agency.
The quarter-acre site includes six parcels with frontage on Shawmut Avenue. The project also will require approval by the Zoning Board of Appeal of 10 departures from zoning regulations for the property.
The BPDA also is reviewing a Fenway church’s plans to create housing and monetize its own real estate with a redevelopment project. The Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral is seeking approval for two 7-story buildings containing 115 condominiums and apartments on undeveloped portions of the 165 Park Drive property.
