A Wegmans store in Hunt Valley, MD. The chain is expected to sign a lease within a month for a supermarket in Northborough.

Wegmans, a supermarket chain that operates 71 stores in five states, may come to Northborough, according to a source familiar with the deal.

The family-owned company based in New York is expected to sign a lease within the next month at The Loop, a 755,000-square-foot “Lifestyle Center” under construction at Routes 9 and 20. New England Development has teamed up with The Wilder Companies and Brendon Properties to develop the mall.

Kevin Giblin, Brendon’s president, won’t confirm or deny rumors of a 140,000-square-foot Wegmans store. He said the development team has leases with Kohl’s, Babies R Us, Best Buy and Dick’s Sporting Goods for The Loop, “but I can’t talk about anything else.”

Jo Natale, Wegmans’ spokeswoman, declined to discuss the Northborough site and would only say that the company plans to open a store in Westwood. “We’re looking at other sites in Greater Boston, but we have not confirmed any other location under consideration,” she said.

But a source said the supermarket franchise is seeking to open four stores in the region, with the first store in either Westwood or Northborough. Today, its stores are concentrated in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia and Maryland.

Wegmans has not filed any plans for a store with Northborough, according to Kathryn Joubert, the town’s planner. “But the rumor is definitely out there,” she said.
