The first parklet in Massachusetts opens today in Lexington.

The parklet, located at 1720 Massachusetts Ave., includes seating for ten to twelve people and bike parking for approximately twenty bicycles.

The Lexington Economic Development and Planning Staffs partnered with local businesses to create the semi-permanent structure. The goal is to provide people and bicyclists with a place to stop and relax. The parklet will be open to the public through Nov. 1.

In May 2012, a bike corral was set up only on the weekends. After several weeks of receiving positive feedback, the board of selectmen voted to have a bike corral open every day in August.

"The goals of the parklet partnership are to create fresh interest in the center, enhance commerce, as well as encourage alternative modes of transportation through improved accommodations," Melisa Tintocalis, director of economic development, said in a statement. "It offers a safer and highly visible new public space."
