Private student housing operator Scape has acquired its second development site in Boston, this time paying $39 million for a Fenway property where another developer had proposed a 29-story tower that drew objections from the Boston Red Sox and neighborhood groups.

Trans National Properties affiliates sold the properties at 2-6 Charlesgate West and 1161 Boylston St. to London-based Scape, which has announced plans for a billion-dollar pipeline of projects in Boston.

The site bordering Ipswich Street and overlooking the Massachusetts Turnpike contains Trans National’s headquarters.

In 2016, Boston-based Trans National proposed an “iconic” 29-story tower containing 195 apartments and condos, replacing three buildings on the half-acre site, in 2016. That same year the Fenway Civic Association expressed “strong reservations” about the proposed height and density of the Trans National project. And the Boston Red Sox said the 340-foot-tall tower – more than 200 feet higher than the maximum neighborhood zoning limit – would spoil Fenway Park spectators’ views.

Scape chose Boston last year as the launching pad for its U.S. expansion. Earlier this month, the firm filed plans to redevelop a Boylston Street property with a 533-unit student housing tower with full-time professional management.

Scape was not immediately available for comment.
