New York developer Tishman Speyer will lead Harvard University’s big foray into life science development in Allston.
The Harvard Allston Land Co. selected Tishman Speyer and its architectural partner Studio Gang of Chicago to lead the project building office and lab space, housing and a hotel on Western Avenue.
The other finalists were Boston-based HYM Investment Group and a partnership between Alexandria Real Estate Equities and National Development.
The first 900,000-square-foot phase built on 14 acres will include office and lab space, housing and a hotel-conference center dubbed the “Treehouse” serving as main entrance, Harvard Allston Land Co. said.
HALC said Tishman Speyer best met its goals for the development including a robust public realm, aggressive affordable housing strategy, growth environment for life science and tech companies, development experience and participation by minority-owned businesses. Tishman Speyer has committed to a 5 percent ownership stake by minority-owned companies, and will partner with the LabCentral life science incubator in Cambridge to connect with startups.
Tishman Speyer recently acquired a life science development site at 105 West First St. in South Boston and developed the Pier Four office and condo project in the Seaport District.
Studio Gang is designer of the recently-approved Kenmore Hotel on Commonwealth Avenue and has partnered with Tishman Speyer on projects in San Francisco, Brooklyn and Chicago. Community outreach will take place in the next several months as the development team prepares detailed proposals for review by the Boston Planning & Development Agency, Harvard Allston Land Company CEO Thomas Glynn said.
