A trio of armed bank robbers struck Rockland Trust Co.’s Vineyard Haven branch yesterday morning as the bank was opening.

Cape & Islands District Attorney Michael O’Keefe’s office said in a statement that the masked robbers “rushed into the bank as employees entered” at about 8:15 a.m.

A security camera photo released by O’Keefe’s office Friday morning showed a figure dressed all in black, wearing a black stocking cap and full-face mask, and carrying a handgun.

It’s uncertain how much money the robbers made off with. According to the Vineyard Gazette, the robbers escaped in a vehicle they stole from one of the tellers. The paper also reported that the robbers tied up the Rockland Trust employees, citing Tisbury police. Assistant District Attorney Tara Miltimore, the office’s spokesperson, did not respond to a request from Banker & Tradesman to confirm that detail.

Falmouth and state police officers and federal agents reportedly searched a Falmouth hotel allegedly connected to the robbery Thursday after arriving with an armored vehicle, the Cape Cod Times reported.

“Federal, State and local police are continuing this investigation and are asking the public for any information regarding the mask depicted in this photo,” Miltimore said in a statement.
