Teens, in foreground, apply for jobs. The Boston Housing Authority has been given approval to hire up to 100 local 15- to 17-year olds for the summer.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino will announce this afternoon that the jobs will go to youth who currently live at BHA developments and applied for a job through the city’s summer jobs program by registering with the Hopeline.

For more than 20 years, the Boston Youth Fund summer jobs program has employed Boston youths in a variety of positions across the city. This year, BHA youth will work in a variety of settings that may include assisting in energy and recycling education, resident health education, gardening and beautification projects, and culinary arts as well as more traditional assignments working with central, development, and maintenance office staff, according to a statement.

The initiative will cost approximately $200,000 and the BHA will hire, in addition to the 100 youth, two coordinators to oversee the program for the summer.
