A development partnership has solidified plans for the future of the Boston Housing Authority’s 28-acre Bunker Hill public housing property, adding 2,100 market-rate apartments and condos while rebuilding the existing 1,100 public housing units.

Corcoran Jennison Assoc. of Dorchester is partnering with SunCal, an Irvine, California developer that specializes in mixed-use and master-planned communities. The existing 41 buildings would be demolished in stages and the new buildings would be laid out in a grid of 13 blocks.

In October, the Boston Housing Authority selected the Corcoran-SunCal partnership to lead the redevelopment project from a field of four developers. In July, the developers launched a new web site, OneCharlestown.com, which provides updates on the project.

A letter of intent was submitted this week to the Boston Redevelopment Authority, starting the public review process. Detailed designs will be filed with the BRA within 30 days, the developers said in an announcement. The design will create new mixed-use buildings, including retail space along Bunker Hill Street, to build connections between the property and surrounding neighborhood.

“The One Charlestown model – a robust partnership with residents combined with the introduction of mixed income units – is the single best way for public housing to be preserved across the entire city of Boston,” Bill McGonagle, Boston Housing Authority administrator, said in a statement.
