Sixty-eight percent of local Millennials said owning a home is a top priority, according to Bank of America’s recent Homebuyer Insights Report. Millennials rank homeownership above getting married (44 percent) and having children (41 percent). Being able to retire, at 77 percent, was the only life priority ranked above homeownership.

The report found that Boston Millennials equate homeownership with personal and financial success, as well as maturity, adulthood and independence. Seventy-one percent of Millennials said they believe their rent will continue to rise every year or every other year. Fifty-four percent of Millennials feel like they’re throwing money away by renting.

Thirty-seven percent of Millennials are looking to buy in the next two years, with 75 percent prioritizing saving for a down payment. Bostonian Millennials said that having enough money saved (67 percent) and a higher salary (36 percent) are the top motivations for buying their first home.

Millennials are staying in the Boston area as well, with 41 percent looking around the city for a home and 39 percent buying elsewhere.
