What: The Foundry at Drydock
Where: 19 Fid Kennedy Ave., South Boston
Owner: Marcus Partners
Built: 2022-2024

A ceremonial groundbreaking on Thursday marked the beginning of construction at Marcus Partners’ new Foundry at Drydock development in South Boston’s Raymond L. Flynn Marine Park.

Ginkgo Bioworks is leasing the 219,000-square-foot life science building, which was designed by SGA and DREAM Collaborative. John Moriarty & Assoc. is joint venturing with women-owned business enterprise Maven Construction to oversee the project.

The project is the first in the marine park to contribute to the city’s climate resiliency infrastructure fund, which will pay for strategies to combat climate change and rising sea levels.

Developers will partner with BioBus, a New York-based program that introduces students in grades K-12 with science careers, on educational programming.

They Said It:

“While the sciences are a significant contributor to our economy and a big part of our development program in the South Boston waterfront, we also want to ensure all kids, particularly those from underrepresented groups, are exposed to STEM careers and opportunities.”
