A local housing executive was selected to lead the nonprofit Fenway Community Development Corp., replacing retiring executive director Leah Camini.

Steven Farrell, the chief operating officer at Metro Housing|Boston, was chosen by the Fenway CDC board following a year-long search.

Metro Housing|Boston provides programs including rental assistance to benefit housing-insecure and homeless individuals. Prior to joining the organization in 2013, Farrell was director of development at the Boston Private Industry Council.

The board selected Farrell based upon his experience in strategic planning, management, fundraising and public engagement, the organization announced.

“His professional experience in nonprofit leadership and his commitment to social justice and grassroots activism make him an ideal candidate,” Fenway CDC Board President Nikki Flionis said in a statement.

Fenway CDC develops and acquires income-restricted properties in the neighborhood to stem displacement. In October, the organization partnered with the Planning Office of Urban Affairs on purchase of the Our Lady’s Guild House to preserve 109 units of affordable housing and address deferred maintenance.
