Master developer LStar Communities has announced plans for a 25-acre public park and recreation facility at SouthField, the former naval air station turned mixed-use community in South Weymouth.

The complex designed by LLD Collaborative will include baseball and soccer fields, street hockey rinks and courts for tennis, basketball and volleyball. Other new amenities will include a renovated gymnasium and outdoor theater, and plans to maximize community use of the area with events such as farmer’s markets and food truck rodeos.

LStar will pay the entire cost of the complex, estimated at up to $8 million, according to a spokesman.

Other new amenities will include a wiffle ball park designed to resemble Fenway Park, batting cages, picnic areas and bocce pits.

LStar acquired the developable portions of the 1,500-acre former South Weymouth Naval Air Station property in 2015 from Starwood Property Trust. A modified reuse plan approved last year by Weymouth officials calls for 3 million square feet of commercial development, including a “Discovery District” containing up to 1 million square feet of office and lab space, along with 3,855 housing units.

Work will begin in September and is scheduled for completion next March, LStar Managing Partner Kyle Corkum said at a press conference this week.

Since the air base closed in 1997, the property has only attracted residential development, including two apartment complexes, 100 single-family homes and a senior living community. Pulte Homes is building the next residential phase, the 24-acre Brookfield Village complex, including 81 single-family homes and 27 townhouses.

Since taking ownership last May, LStar has spent over $9 million on environmental cleanup and new amenities.
