Massachusetts officials are breaking ground on the state’s first all-solar powered commuter rail train station near Boston’s Fenway Park.

The $13.5 million overhaul of the Yawkey commuter rail stop will extend the station’s platforms. It also will more than double the number of times trains along the Worcester and Framingham line can use the station – from 17 stops per day to 40.

The station will also feature a solar array that designers say will produce more than enough power to serve it.
The overhaul is part of a $450 million redevelopment of the Fenway area, including the right to build over the Massachusetts Turnpike, 330 new apartments and new office and retail space in one of the city’s busiest neighborhood.

The train station overhaul is expected to create up to 200 jobs. (AP)
