The unemployment rate rose for the third consecutive month and 5,300 jobs were lost in Massachusetts in August, according to statistics from the Office of Labor and Workforce Development.
The Bay State’s jobless rate in August was reported at 5.8 percent, a 0.2 percent increase from July, but down 1 .4 percent from the August 2013 rate of 7.2 percent. The national unemployment rate for the month is 6.1 percent.
The report states that "job losses were impacted by temporary employment disruptions in the retail trade sector," a possible reference to the six-week employee strikes at Market Basket supermarket chains, which ended in late August.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics revised its July job estimates to a 12,200 job gain from the 13,800 gain previously reported for the month.
Since August 2013, Massachusetts has added a net of 54,300 jobs; with 53,500 jobs added in the private sector.
