Middlesex County Southern District Register of Deeds has announced the successful implementation of electronic recording of real estate documents at the Registry of Deeds in East Cambridge.

"We have electronically recorded more than a thousand documents since we began providing the service on July 27," said Register Eugene C. Brune. "While that is only a small percentage based on the total number of documents recorded in Middlesex South, we expect the number of e-recorded documents to increase dramatically as real estate attorneys, particularly those with offices in the more out-lying areas of the district, become more accustomed to using the service."

The Middlesex South Registry of Deeds is the largest land records office in New England, and one of the busiest nationwide. The district, the most populous in eastern Massachusetts, extends from Cambridge as far west as Ashby, according to a statement.

Last year, more than 204,000 documents were processed in the Middlesex South recorded land section.

Brune views electronic recording to help both the registry and the real estate attorneys utilizing the service.

"As the volume of recordings increases, it allows us to speed up the process," he said. "It allows the attorney the luxury of conducting the closing at his office and recording the documents right away without having to travel all the way to Cambridge, find a parking space and wait in line to record."
