A Rockland life science company will relocate to Boston’s Pier 4 office pier complex this summer with a lease of 60,500 square feet for its new headquarters.
EMD Serono is a U.S. arm of German pharma giant Merck and specializes in fertility, cancer and multiple sclerosis treatments, The company has been headquartered in Rockland for decades and renewed a 10-year lease at 1 Technology Place in 2015 for 202,000 square feet.
The new Seaport District lease comprises two stories of the 370,000-square-foot office building, which was developed by Tishman Speyer on the former site of Anthony’s Pier Four restaurant.
“Our vibrant new office setting in the Seaport District will bring EMD Serono into the center of the globally leading healthcare innovation hub to support our future growth,” EMD Serono President Chris Round said in a statement.
The new location does not include any research space, but EMD Serono will continue to operate its R&D facility at 45 Middlesex Turnpike in Billerica, spokeswoman Melissa Begin said.
The vacancy rate for class A office space in the Seaport District is currently 3.7 percent, according to CBRE, with an availability rate of 14.8 percent. The average asking rent is $70.18 per square foot on a gross basis.
