Pulte Homes moved a step closer to approval for a 200-unit condo complex at SouthField in Weymouth after it was awarded variances by an agency overseeing redevelopment of the 1,400-acre property.

During a meeting this week, SouthField Redevelopment Authority approved setback variances and a waiver for a parking lot to be constructed in front of the buildings, The Weymouth News reported. The vote clears the way for the homebuilder to submit a site plan for final approval.

SRA Chairman Walter Flynn said the board’s decision sent a positive message to developers looking to build at SouthField, the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station property spanning parts of Abington, Rockland and Weymouth.

Since the base closed in 1997, only two apartment complexes, 100 single-family homes and a senior living complex have been built. In August, Gov. Deval Patrick signed legislation abolishing SouthField’s previous overseer, South Shore Tri-Town Development Corp., and replacing it with the new redevelopment authority.

Starwood Land Ventures is the property’s master developer.
