Revere Mayor Thomas G. Ambrosino isn’t going to spend much time sulking over the closing of Wonderland Greyhound Park.
A day following the park’s closure after 75 years in operation, Ambrosino is hopeful the site will be redeveloped.
Referring to option rights to purchase the park held by the owners of Suffolk Downs, Ambrosino said, "We would love to see that (Suffolk purchase) happen. Suffolk ownership is well regarded in Revere."
Ambrosino said he expects the site to be "dark and vacant" for the next 18 months.
The mayor said he is also interested in other redevelopment options if Suffolk doesn’t bite.
"We would like to see an office park or business use with good tax revenues that will not overtax city services. We have flexible zoning. Maybe Mass. General would develop it. We think it would make a great corporate headquarters location."
Wonderland opened in 1906 as a massive amusement park, a precursor to Disney and the theme parks common today. A fire destroyed the amusement park but led to the opening of Wonderland Greyhound Park in 1935, one year after the legalization of greyhound racing in 1934. Legislation ending dog racing in the state began the track’s slow death.
"It should be an easy sell," Ambrosino said. "This is a great site. We have 35 acres with public transportation sitting at the intersection of two highways (1A and 60) with direct access to Logan."
