The Nantucket estate of late billionaire Richard Mellon Scaife has been sold for $27.2 million.

Scaife, heir to the Mellon fortune and owner of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, died in August at the age of 82.

The transaction falls just short of the Nantucket record $27.5-million sale of 11 and 15 Cathcart Road in 2010.

The five-bedroom, 6,226-square-foot home on a 1.6-acre lot was acquired by Kimball Sherburne LLC on Dec. 8, according to Registry of Deeds records.

The corporation lists as one of its managers Joseph O’Neil of Midland, Texas, but an employee at O’Neill Properties Ltd. said O’Neil was a trustee and not the buyer of the property.

Attorney George Cushing of Woburn, who is also listed as a manager for the corporation, said the buyer’s identity was confidential.
