The Boston Redevelopment Authority board of directors unanimously approved 36 new rental units in South Boston.

The three-story building approved for construction at 902 East Second St. in South Boston will feature 21 one-bedroom apartments, six two-bedrooms, six three-bedrooms, and three townhouses.

The $9 million development will replace an unused lot at a site with access to South Boston’s Pleasure Bay and Castle Island. The 39,600-square-foot project will include approximately 54 parking spaces in an underground garage with room for bicycles accessed by an entrance off of East Second Street.

The new units are being developed by 902 East Second Street, LLC. The project will create 50 temporary construction jobs and two permanent jobs. Groundbreaking at the site is expected in the fall of 2012 with an estimated March 2014 completion date.
