TD Bank has plans to close its branch in Springfield’s Mason Square neighborhood, but area residents and state legislators are pleading with regulators to stop the move.

According to MassLive, the branch is the only full-service bank or credit union location for several miles around, and the neighborhood is majority-minority. Residents say they need services like cashing checks, opening bank accounts and applying for mortgages.

“We respect and value our customers in Mason Square, and we remain committed to continuing to serve the community through our six other TD Bank stores in Springfield, including three that are less than two miles from our State Street location,” the bank told the newspaper in a statement.
