A number of communities in Massachusetts are in good shape when it comes to managing credit card debt.
A new WalletHub study determined where Americans have accumulated the most and least sustainable credit-card debts. The study drew upon TransUnion credit data to calculate the cost and time required to pay off the median card balances of more than 2,500 U.S. cities.
Quincy is in the top percentile for having the most sustainable credit card debt. According to the study, the median credit card debt in Quincy is $1,790, and the interest is roughly $80, with an estimated pay-off time of six months.
Lexington and Arlington also were in the top percentile, with Winchester, Watertown, Waltham, Malden, Cambridge, Burlington and Belmont in the top 3 percent.
Bridgewater, which is in the 69th percentile, performed the worst of any Massachusetts community in the city. Average median credit card debt is over $2,500, with the cost to pay off at $212 and an estimated pay-off time of 12 months.
The country as a whole is racking up debt at an unprecedented rate; the total credit card debt nationwide is a record $1 trillion, according to the Federal Reserve.
