A new study by student loan refinancing marketplace LendEDU has found than many Americans are worried their finances aren’t strong enough to get them through a recession.

The firm commissioned an online survey of 502 nationally representative U.S. residents, conducted on Aug. 21 and 22, and found that 37 percent believe their finances are too weak to withstand a recession, while 40 percent feel their finances are strong enough and 22 percent are unsure.

Thirty-two percent of respondents reported having no money in an emergency fund, and 55 percent reported having $1,000 or less. The median amount in respondents’ emergency funds was $712.

In response to recent recession fears, triggered by the stock market’s recent gyrations and President Donald Trump’s trade war with China, 42 percent of the survey’s respondents said they were planning to spend less and save more.
